Service Learning

The children in DPa are getting ready for their first visit to Happy Lodge, part of their Service Learning programme. The children looked at photos of the residents and talked with each other about questions they had or connections they were making. Some children were asking what language the residents spoke; others wondered if the residents could walk or hear...the children discussed ways they could communicate — even without words. They decided to make a postcard for each residents so the they could learn a bit about us. As the children worked on their cards, I heard many comments about feeling nervous but excited to be making a difference in the someone's life...just like the character in the book we read aloud, Remembering Mr. Nicholls by Ciara O'Toole. I can't wait to see the children greet the residents and start a new friendship!
